Why Does My Site Indicate It’s “Not Secure” All-of-a-sudden?

January 03 / 2018

If you’re wondering why your website indicates it’s “Not Secure,” there’s an important reason why that everyone should know.

With the increasing number of hacks happening, major web browsers like Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox are making changes to protect their users. This is the good news, but it also means you may need to update your website.

Earlier this year, Google and Mozilla have been actively monitoring all websites that collect password and payment input fields, and have been marking those who do not hold an SSL Certificate as being “Not Secure.” In Firefox, this is indicated by a small “not locked/secure” icon to the left of the browser’s location bar. In Chrome, it’s indicated by the words “Not Secure” in the same location. (See the examples below.)

Making your website fully secure is especially important if you have an e-commerce website, or if you’re using a CMS, such as WordPress, which prompts you to log in to make any changes to your website.

Secure Your Site Now

There is little doubt that all major browsers are going to continue to push towards a more secure experience. The most effective way to do this is to purchase and install an SSL certificate to fully secure your entire website, not just the parts that include forms and/or e-commerce functionality.

The SSL certificate will encrypt all data sent through the site and will make it safe for your visitors’ use. The certificate will also allow for a secure connection between your web hosting server and browsers such as Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox. More browsers will likely follow suit.

By installing an SSL certificate, all forms on your website that are actively collecting data will be encrypted and secured as the data is getting stored and/or transmitted. This will also switch your website URL (located in the location bar of your browser) from HTTP to HTTPS. The ‘S’ at the end of HTTPS stands for “Secure,” indicating the site is now fully secure for its use. In addition, a lock will appear next to your URL and the word “Secure” will also appear in Google Chrome. (See the examples below.)
